About Chamson Sister Cities

For 40 years, Sonoma Chambolle-Musigny Sister Cities, Inc (Chamson) has forged a meaningful and mutually beneficial relationship with our friends in Chambolle-Musigny in Burgundy, France. We have done this by organizing official trips to the city and we’ve hosted French delegates here in Sonoma. In 1992, we coordinated the first student internship when Jerome Baudrion worked at Ravenswood Winery for the summer season. Since then, there have been other professional exchanges which have provided valuable experiences for many Sonomans.

Chambolle-Musigny is situated in the heart of the Burgundy region, near Dijon. It finds its origin in the sixth century and is surrounded by some of the most famous vineyards of “Bourgogne.” It is Sonoma’s oldest Sister City, established in 1959 by local residents whose love of France and fine wines led them to propose what has become an enduring connection between our two cities. Today, Chambolle-Musigny has a population of about 350, most of whom are associated with the wine industry.

The Henri Cardinaux Scholarship Fund is another way we support students who want to study in France. It was started in memory of our member Henri Cardinaux as a way to recognize his service on the Chamson Board and as an active and long time member of our association.

“The first time I traveled to Chambolle-Musigny was in 1987 with my brother.  We were teenagers but treated like royalty by our hosts.  I love getting New Year’s cards from the kids we have hosted and am looking forward to seeing them all grown up!” – Joanne Sanders, Mayor Pro Tem, City of Sonoma
